54 injured by firecrackers in Hyderabad, majority from ‘mirchi’ bombs: SD Eye Hospital

Hyderabad: At least 54 people suffered eye injuries from firecrackers during Diwali celebrations in Hyderabad, with doctors identifying ‘mirchi’ bombs as the leading cause, according to SD Eye Hospital Superintendent Dr. Modini.

Of the injured, 15 were children and 39 adults. Three patients required hospital admission, while two 13-year-old Durga Prasad from Kamareddy and 36-year-old Anjaiah from Proddatur were in critical condition and shifted to the operation theatre.

Injuries peak by evening

Dr. Modini stated that by 7 p.m. on Diwali night, 47 patients had reported to the hospital. That number rose to 54 by the end of the day, all with eye-related injuries caused by firecrackers.

He noted that 95% of the injuries resulted from the use of ‘mirchi’ bombs. “People must take strict precautions while bursting firecrackers,” he said, adding that the hospital had kept emergency arrangements in place.

Doctors will remain on standby until Tuesday morning to manage any further cases.
