Hyderabad doctor named in CBI FIR in national medical college scam

Hyderabad: Dr P. Rajani Reddy, superintendent of the Modern Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj, has been named the 13th accused in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s FIR related to the national medical college scam.

Dr Rajani Reddy was part of the National Medical Commission (NMC) inspection team that visited Shri Rawatpura Sarkar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Chhattisgarh on June 30—the same day the CBI conducted coordinated raids on the campus. The agency claims the inspection and subsequent approval process were compromised.

Following the operation, the CBI filed an FIR naming 34 individuals, including senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, NMC, and administrators of multiple private medical colleges. The list includes figures from both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana—among them Father Joseph Kommareddy of Father Colombo Institute of Medical Sciences in Warangal, Ankam Rambabu from Andhra Pradesh, and his associate B Hari Prasad.

Dr Rajani Reddy has denied any involvement in illegal activity. She clarified that while three others were arrested for allegedly accepting bribes during the June 30 inspection, she was only questioned by the agency as a witness. She has approached the Chhattisgarh High Court for legal relief.

The case, described as one of the most sweeping corruption probes in India’s medical education sector, alleges systemic manipulation of inspections and approvals by a nexus of officials and private entities across several states.
