Hyderabad: Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narsimha announced that the state would hold a special pulse polio vaccination drive on October 12 across six districts. The drive aims to immunise all children below five years of age and reinforce India’s polio-free status.
Telangana pulse polio vaccination drive across six districts
Raja Narasimha said Telangana reported its last polio case in 2007, while India’s last case occurred in 2011. However, several countries, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, recently reported new infections. Therefore, the Union Health Ministry instructed states to conduct vaccination drives in districts with international travel movement.
Following this directive, officials selected 290 districts across India. Among them, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal, Sangareddy, and Hanmakonda fall under Telangana. The state also decided to extend the campaign to the urban areas of the Warangal district, making it a total of six.
Officials target vaccination of 17.5 lakh children
Health officers estimated that 17,56,789 children aged 0 to 5 years live in these six districts. They plan to vaccinate every child during the special drive on October 12.
The minister urged parents to bring their children, from newborns to five-year-olds, to nearby vaccination booths. He also asked community health teams to reach every household to ensure full coverage. Meanwhile, senior officials said the state’s goal is to maintain zero polio cases through public participation.
Raja Narasimha stressed that collective responsibility and awareness will keep Telangana and India permanently polio-free.
