Hyderabad: After the tragic Kurnool bus accident, the Telangana Transport Department intensified vigilance and launched a major crackdown on private buses violating safety norms. Officials said inspections would begin across Greater Hyderabad from Saturday to ensure strict compliance with transport and safety standards.

The checks will focus on private travel operators that ignore regulations or fail to maintain vehicles properly. Moreover, the department has formed six special teams to carry out inspections on buses, documents, and maintenance records. As a result, operators who violate safety norms will face immediate penalties and possible suspension of permits.
According to senior officials, the decision followed the recent Kurnool tragedy that exposed glaring lapses in vehicle safety. Investigations revealed that the bus involved in the crash had several mechanical faults and failed to meet mandatory maintenance standards. Consequently, authorities decided to take preventive action across the state.
Tragic Kurnool bus accident triggers statewide alert
The accident occurred near Chinna Tekuru on the outskirts of Kurnool when a private bus collided with a motorcycle and dragged it for nearly 300 metres. The impact caused a massive fire, killing more than 20 people. Officials later confirmed that over-speeding, poor maintenance, and driver negligence contributed to the scale of the disaster.
Therefore, Telangana authorities have intensified enforcement across all routes connecting Hyderabad and neighbouring districts. In addition, the department is monitoring night services closely to prevent fatigue-related accidents. Transport officers have also been directed to coordinate with police teams to strengthen highway patrolling.
Furthermore, the department plans to hold meetings with private travel operators next week to review safety protocols. Through this initiative, officials aim to ensure that every passenger bus operating in the state meets approved fitness and insurance requirements.

Transport Commissionerate sources said the checks are not punitive but preventive. The department wants operators to understand that passenger safety must come first. Therefore, the upcoming drive will include awareness sessions for bus staff and owners.
Officials stressed that compliance with national road safety norms is mandatory for all private fleets. In addition, special attention will be given to brakes, tyres, lighting, and emergency exits to ensure passenger protection.
The Telangana Transport Department reiterated that consistent enforcement, better maintenance, and responsible driving can together prevent accidents like Kurnool in the future.
