Telangana under orange and red alerts as Montha cyclone triggers heavy rain

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Telangana districts over the next 24 hours. It also warned that thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph may hit some areas.

Telangana braces for heavy rain as Montha cyclone strengthens

The Met Centre said Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, and Warangal districts will experience heavy to very heavy rain on Wednesday. Therefore, it issued an orange alert for these regions.

Officials on Tuesday declared red alerts for Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Khammam districts after predicting intense rainfall. Moreover, the Montha cyclone over the west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe storm. The system will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on Tuesday night, according to the Met Centre.

As the cyclone moves inland, wind speeds could reach 90 to 100 kmph. The IMD warned that this might trigger widespread rainfall across Telangana on Wednesday.

Choutuppal records the highest rainfall across Telangana

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre recorded heavy rainfall in many parts of the state. Choutuppal in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district logged 6 cm, the highest in Telangana. Manchal in Rangareddy also saw 6 cm, while Sangareddy and Kandhi each received 5 cm.

In addition, Sadashivpet reported 4 cm of rain. Kondapur, Raikode, Nekkonda, Jogipet, Munipalli, Narayankhed, Chennur, Chevella, and Nagarjunasagar each logged 3 cm. Furthermore, the IMD urged residents to remain alert because heavy showers and strong winds may continue through Wednesday.
