Telangana to become India’s aero-engine capital by 2030: Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad: Telangana will become India’s aero-engine capital by 2030, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said at the India’s Aerospace & Defence Manufacturing Summit held at ISB, Hyderabad, on Saturday.

He announced that the state is preparing a comprehensive roadmap to build a globally competitive aerospace and defence ecosystem. This will involve collaboration with leading industries and academic institutions.

Aero-engine capital by 2030: Telangana outlines bold growth roadmap

According to Sridhar Babu, early initiatives by past Congress governments laid the foundation for Telangana’s defence sector. As a result, the state now has a strategic edge in building a full-spectrum defence hub.

Due to recent geopolitical shifts and supply chain changes, countries are seeking reliable partners like India. Telangana aims to leverage this trend with well-focused policies and consistent execution.

India’s defence production reached ₹1.5 lakh crore last year. Additionally, exports grew by 12 percent. These figures reflect growing global trust in India’s defence sector. Telangana plans to make aerospace and defence a key driver of its $3 trillion economic goal by 2047.

Telangana’s defence exports and investments see sharp rise

At present, the state hosts over 25 major A&D firms and more than 1,500 MSMEs. Aerospace exports rose from ₹15,900 crore in 2023–24 to ₹30,742 crore in just the first nine months of 2024–25. This sharp increase shows strong momentum.

Recent investments are expanding the state’s manufacturing base. These include the ₹425 crore Tata–Safran aero-engine facility at Adibatla, which is now operational. Furthermore, an ₹800 crore JSW Defence UAV unit and a ₹500 crore facility by Premier Explosives are nearing completion.

Sridhar Babu added that several international companies are in advanced discussions to invest in Telangana.

The summit also featured prominent speakers like Hero Enterprises chairman Sunil Kant Munjal and ISB Dean Prof. P. Madan. Other senior academic and industry leaders attended the event as well.
