Hyderabad: With mercury levels soaring past 40°C across Telangana, air conditioners have become a summer essential in homes, offices, and shops. But while they offer relief, poor usage and lack of maintenance are increasingly leading to dangerous AC explosions.
Summer months, especially May and June, see round-the-clock AC usage. Many units run continuously for 15 hours or more – raising the risk of compressor failure, overheating, and, in extreme cases, explosions. Experts say such accidents spike during peak heat due to negligence in basic upkeep.
Here’s what users should be doing to avoid disaster:
1. Regular Servicing:
If your AC has run for over 600 hours, it needs a service check. Routine servicing ensures efficiency and detects faults early.
2. Avoid Continuous Usage:
Running the unit non-stop puts intense pressure on the system. It’s safer to shut it off every 4–5 hours and let it rest for at least an hour.
3. Clean the Filter:
Filters clogged with dust restrict airflow and strain the compressor. Clean them every 4–5 weeks to keep things running smoothly.
4. Check for Gas Leaks:
Leaked refrigerant gas coming in contact with hot components can trigger a blast. Summer users should get leak checks done regularly.
5. Use a Stabiliser:
Frequent voltage fluctuations can damage the unit. A reliable stabiliser protects your AC and extends its lifespan.
6. Set Correct Temperature:
The optimal setting is 24°C. Lower temperatures spike electricity bills and put unnecessary load on the system.
Ignoring these basic steps can turn a cooling device into a hazard. Follow them to keep your summer safe and comfortable.
