Hyderabad: Huge crowds filled Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) and Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) on Saturday as passengers travelled home for Rakhi Purnima.
Women from across Hyderabad arrived early to tie rakhi to their brothers and join family celebrations. Ticket counters saw long lines from morning.
Festive travel clogs highways
Traffic crawled on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway. Jams hit Vanasthalipuram, Bhagyalatha, RTC Colony and Hayathnagar, where a narrow road near the bus stand worsened delays. Overflow traffic entered service roads, creating further blockages.
The Uppal Ring Road faced heavy congestion. Vehicles heading from Uppal to the Warangal National Highway stood still for long stretches. Queues stretched through Uppal, Annojiguda and Ghatkesar, with the Annojiguda–Ghatkesar trip taking 50 minutes.
On the Secunderabad–Bollaram road, a five-kilometre jam left commuters spending two hours to travel from JBS to the Outer Ring Road. Packed RTC buses moved slowly, frustrating passengers.
