Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay is set to face questioning by the Special Investigation Team today over the alleged phone-tapping case. He had reviewed case records in detail and gathered supporting evidence before the deposition.
On Thursday, he met senior officials of the Union Home Ministry in Hyderabad, along with retired police officers from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and former personnel from the SIB, SIT, and Counter-Intelligence departments. The discussions reportedly centred on the surveillance of his phone during the previous state government’s tenure.
Phone tapping under the KCR government
Intelligence sources had confirmed that Bandi Sanjay’s phones were among those most extensively monitored during the K. Chandrashekar Rao administration. They presented related evidence to him. He is the first Union Minister of State for Home Affairs to depose before the SIT in this investigation.
The BJP has elevated the matter to a national political issue. Party leaders have alleged that in an earlier MLAs’ poaching case, the phone of BJP national leader B.L. Santosh was also tapped. The party has demanded that the probe be handed over to the CBI. BJP workers planned a protest at the Dilkusha Guest House over the alleged surveillance.
SIT officials had issued notices to Bandi Sanjay on June 24 to appear for questioning. He had cited Parliament sessions as the reason for not attending earlier. He was expected to appear on Friday with prior approval, accompanied by his personal staff, whose phones were also allegedly monitored by the previous government.
