Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar will appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on August 8 in connection with the phone-tapping case linked to the previous BRS regime.
In a letter to the SIT, Bandi Sanjay confirmed that he and his staff would attend the hearing on the scheduled date. He had earlier offered to depose on July 28, but the ongoing Parliament session prevented him from doing so.
Bandi Sanjay said he would present crucial evidence in the case. He also claimed that central intelligence agencies had already gathered significant inputs about the illegal surveillance operation.
CBI Probe Demanded as Political Angle Emerges
Bandi Sanjay accused former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao of leading a politically driven surveillance campaign. He alleged that phones of judges, married couples, and political rivals were tapped under the BRS regime.
He stated that the BJP was taking the issue seriously and had called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. “Only a central agency can investigate such a politically motivated scandal fairly,” he said.
The SIT has already questioned former Telangana Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief T. Prabhakar Rao, who faces serious charges. Investigators say he formed a Special Operations Team under a suspended DSP to carry out political surveillance.
Hyderabad police arrested the DSP and three other officials in March 2024. They allegedly deleted data from electronic devices and tapped phones during the BRS rule. A court later granted them bail.
According to the SIT, the accused created unauthorised profiles and misused intelligence infrastructure to monitor individuals.
