Hyderabad: The Centre on Monday confirmed in the Rajya Sabha that the Bankacharla irrigation project proposed by Andhra Pradesh on the Godavari River has not yet commenced, amid objections raised by Telangana over potential injustice.
Congress MP Anil Kumar Yadav raised the issue in Parliament, warning that the project could harm Telangana’s water rights and demanded a formal response from the Union government.
Centre Says Only Pre-Feasibility Submitted
Responding on behalf of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Minister of State Raj Bhushan Choudhary said Andhra Pradesh had submitted only a pre-feasibility report to the Centre and that actual construction had not started.
He stated that Andhra Pradesh had officially informed the Centre of the project’s non-commencement.

The Telangana government, meanwhile, has formally asked the Centre to halt the Bankacharla project. Officials have cited concerns over potential harm to state water interests.
The Centre assured that any future progress on the project would require consultation with concerned departments and neighbouring states before moving forward.
