HYDERABAD: The Commissioner of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and East Protection Agency (HYDRAA), A. V. Ranganath, has announced that all future Bathukamma Celebrations will be held at the historic Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet. The site is now officially designated as the central venue for the festival.
This decision follows a recent verdict by the City Civil Court, which rejected a private ownership claim over the site and upheld HYDRAA’s rights to the lake. The court dismissed a case filed by BRS leader Edla Sudhakar Reddy, who argued that the Bathukamma Kunta was not a lake and claimed ownership of the land.
Following the ruling, Commissioner Ranganath stated that HYDRAA has initiated restoration works at Bathukamma Kunta. The project includes lake cleaning, desilting, and restoring the natural water flow. Notably, excavation carried out in February revealed water at a depth of four feet, confirming the lake’s intact natural structure.
The local community has welcomed the move, praising HYDRAA’s efforts and expressing hope that the full restoration of the lake will not only enable the proper observance of Bathukamma but also enhance the local ecosystem. Commissioner Ranganath assured that the restoration will not impact any residential areas, and all work will remain confined to the existing 5.15-acre expanse.
According to the project details released by HYDRAA, the site will be developed not just as a cultural hub but also as an ecological and recreational space. The plan includes beautification around the lake, walking paths, and various public amenities.
These initiatives mark a significant step in the preservation of Hyderabad’s historic lakes while also reinforcing the city’s commitment to safeguarding its cultural and traditional heritage.
