HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Backward Classes (BC) Commission has recommended that the state government accord top priority to the poorest among the most backward castes among Backward Classes when sanctioning Indiramma housing. The decision was taken at a meeting held by the Commission on Thursday.
The Commission, headed by Chairman G Niranjan, noted the dire living conditions of nomadic communities during its visits to Vemulawada, Jagityala, Sircilla, Amangal, Achampeta, and surrounding areas last month. Emphasising the urgency of intervention, the Commission stated that both housing and employment opportunities must be extended to these communities.
As part of its recommendations, the Commission also appealed to the government to direct banks to prioritise financial support for these castes under the Rajiv Yuva Vikas Scheme. It underlined that the inclusive development of these communities is critical for equitable progress across the state.
The Commission passed a resolution requesting the state government to grant the Telangana BC Commission powers on par with those of the National BC Commission. It also declared its intention to review the case of 26 castes that were excluded from the BC list following the formation of Telangana.
To expedite decisions on caste-related issues, the Commission called upon the Planning Department to share data collected through the 2024 Caste Survey. It observed that timely access to this data would enable faster and more informed resolutions on community-specific concerns.
Additionally, the Commission passed another resolution urging both the Union and State Governments to enact legislation ensuring 42% political reservation for BCs. It appealed to all political parties and caste organisations to support this demand, which it termed essential for true social justice.
