HYDERABAD, February 6: In a meeting held under the auspices of the People’s Committee on Caste Census and the VSC Employees Federation at Somajiguda, leaders voiced strong opposition to the government’s stance on the caste census. The gathering saw senior leaders, including former minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, speaking out against the current administration’s handling of the issue.
The speakers criticised the government’s disregard for the Backward Classes (BC) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities. They pointed out that while discussions on caste census were ongoing, the government’s rhetoric, including claims about caste population percentages, was not only misleading but also offensive.
Prominent figures like Professors Tirumali, Manohar, and Vishweshwar Rao, along with others, expressed their concerns, accusing the government of misrepresenting the facts. They questioned the government’s claim that the BC population has decreased over the years, pointing to the contradiction in stating that the number of OCs has grown, despite census data showing the opposite.
The leaders referenced the Srikrishna Committee’s report, which noted a 53% BC population, questioning why such figures were being dismissed under the current government. They urged the government to reconsider its approach and to address the issue of caste census with more transparency and respect for BC communities.
