Hyderabad: Telangana Congress leaders launched a protest in Delhi demanding 42% reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies and all upcoming elections. The party aims to ensure BC representation across electoral processes, including municipal and panchayat polls.
Senior leaders, ministers, and MLAs travelled to the capital this morning following the arrival of party cadre from all districts via a special train. Demonstrations are scheduled today and tomorrow at Jantar Mantar, jointly led by Congress functionaries and BC community associations.
The protest is designed to pressure the BJP-led Centre into approving an ordinance enabling 42% BC quota implementation across electoral institutions.
Speaking ahead of the protest, Minister Vakiti Srihari challenged the Union government to “prove its sincerity” by passing the BC reservation bill in Parliament. He stated that while neither Rahul Gandhi nor Telangana CM Revanth Reddy belong to BC communities, both are committed to advancing a caste-based census backed by scientific classification.
Srihari also criticised BJP leaders for reportedly conditioning their support on the exclusion of Muslims from the BC list. “If the BJP opposes Muslim inclusion, why aren’t they doing the same in Gujarat or Andhra Pradesh?” he asked.
