Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka expressed deep anguish over the death of senior Telangana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, describing it as a tragic and distressing incident. He visited the bereaved family on Monday and conveyed condolences on behalf of the Telangana government.
During his visit, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy spoke with Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet, over the phone to assure full support. Both leaders said the state government stands firmly with the officer’s family in their fight for justice.
Puran Kumar, who had served as Additional DGP in Haryana and previously worked with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), was a decorated officer who had received Presidential medals. He was found dead on October 7, reportedly after facing caste-based harassment from senior colleagues.
Puran Kumar suicide: Bhatti slams Haryana, Chandigarh over inaction
Bhatti Vikramarka cited the suicide note in which Kumar named DGP Kapoor and SP Narendra, accusing them of persistent humiliation. He questioned the delay in action, saying, “When there is clear evidence, why hasn’t the government acted as per law?” He noted that even after a week, the Haryana government and Chandigarh police had neither arrested the accused nor conducted the post-mortem.
He termed the family’s ordeal — being denied access to the body — as “cruel and inhuman.” The Deputy CM condemned the retention of Kapoor as DGP despite earlier allegations of caste discrimination against him.
Bhatti also criticised the inaction of both the Haryana and Central governments, holding the BJP-led administration responsible for ensuring accountability. “This is a human rights issue, not a political one,” he said. “Every citizen has the right to live with dignity, and denying that right is unconstitutional.”
He demanded immediate arrests of the accused officers and protection for Kumar’s wife, mother, and two daughters. AICC SC Cell Chairman Koppula Raju, Chandigarh Congress president H.S. Lucky, and Dr Vinay accompanied him during the visit.
