Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Friday asked GENCO directors and senior officials to draw up long-term strategies for power generation based on Telangana’s projected demand.
At a review meeting held at Praja Bhavan, the Deputy CM noted that peak demand in the state had climbed from 15,497 MW in March 2023 to 17,162 MW in March 2025. Officials were directed to project requirements up to 2047 and plan accordingly.
He stressed that future initiatives, including the Future City project, Musi River rejuvenation, industrial growth, and agricultural needs, would further raise consumption.
Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted free power to about 30 lakh agricultural pump sets costing ₹12,500 crore annually, and 200 units of free electricity for the poor at an estimated ₹2,000 crore, likely to rise to ₹3,000 crore. Combined obligations could reach ₹17,000 crore in the coming years, he said.
He called for faster development of green energy under schemes like Indira Solar Girijala Vikasam, aimed at solar-powered irrigation for 6.7 lakh acres of tribal lands.
Officials were told to plan for new thermal plants to replace outdated units, including a new 800 MW unit at the decommissioned Kothagudem site and another at Ramagundam, where an old 62.5 MW plant was shut.
Bhatti Vikramarka gave directors “full freedom” to execute the government’s vision while promising full support for Telangana REDCO to emerge as a national model.
Daily monitoring of power purchase agreements signed with other states and international investors was ordered, along with speeding up rooftop solar panel work under housing schemes.
A coordination team between the Irrigation Department and GENCO will advance floating solar projects.
The meeting was attended by Energy Principal Secretary Naveen Mittal, TRANSCO CMD D. Krishna Bhaskar, GENCO CMD Harish, REDCO VC&MD Anila, and other senior staff.
