Hyderabad: Recent heavy rains have transformed the check dams built across the Bikkeru stream in Tungaturthi mandal into breathtaking cascades, drawing large crowds from nearby villages. Locals, including youth and farmers, flocked to enjoy the temporary waterfalls formed by the gushing stream flowing over the structures.
Beyond their scenic beauty, farmers said the check dams play a crucial role in recharging groundwater. Many reported that borewells and open wells in the area have refilled, enabling them to cultivate two crops annually.
Rural irrigation boosted, but dam quality raises concerns
Agriculture groups noted that these small irrigation structures have become lifelines for rural farming. They help retain rainwater, which in turn nourishes the land and supports year-round cultivation.
However, not all is well. In some locations, farmers noticed cracks and surface damage in the dams due to the pressure of heavy water flow. These signs of poor construction quality have raised concerns about the long-term stability of such projects.
Farmers urged the government to enforce strict quality standards in projects built with public funds. âIf construction flaws continue, even well-intentioned development will collapse,â a local farmer said.
For now, the Bikkeru stream check dams continue to offer both visual delight and vital support to the regionâs agriculture. As a result, they have become a seasonal attraction and a source of livelihood for villagers in the area.
