HYDERABAD: Concerns over bird flu have led to a significant decrease in chicken consumption across Telangana, particularly on Sundays when demand is typically high. Consumers are opting for mutton and fish as alternatives, causing chicken vendors to report substantial drops in sales. Despite these concerns, chicken prices have remained relatively stable, ranging from ₹200 to ₹220 per kilogram. Experts advise that while it’s prudent to avoid consuming infected poultry, properly cooking uninfected chicken at temperatures between 70°C and 100°C renders it safe for consumption.
In response to the situation, the Telangana government has heightened vigilance. Food safety officials have conducted extensive inspections across various regions, uncovering approximately 500 quintals of spoiled chicken in certain shops. Legal actions have been initiated against vendors found selling substandard meat, with authorities warning of stringent measures against those compromising public health.
The decline in chicken consumption has inadvertently boosted sales in mutton and fish markets, as consumers seek alternative protein sources. Vendors in these sectors have noted increased patronage, contrasting with the downturn experienced by their counterparts in the poultry industry.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, implementing measures to ensure public safety and maintain food quality standards. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to recommended precautions when handling and preparing poultry products.
