Hyderabad: Telangana BJP leaders submitted a complaint to the Election Commission on Thursday. They urged the Commission to stop the government from appointing senior Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin as a minister during the Jubilee Hills by-election campaign.

BJP complaint over Azharuddin minister post before bypoll

The BJP argued that giving Azharuddin a minister post could influence voters. The party asked the Commission to postpone the move until polling ends. Deputy floor leader Payal Shankar and BJP Election Commission Affairs Committee chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy met Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj and handed over their memorandum.

They said media reports revealed plans to swear in Azharuddin soon. BJP leaders accused the Congress of trying to attract voters and violating the Model Code of Conduct.

BJP urges ECI to stop voter influence

Party leaders said the announcement, even if outside the code’s full jurisdiction, would still affect the Jubilee Hills bypoll. They asked the Election Commission to treat it as a political attempt to sway voters and stop it immediately.

They also reminded officials that Azharuddin had contested the Jubilee Hills seat in the 2023 Assembly elections. The BJP said giving him a minister post now would directly impact the bypoll result. The party urged the ECI to act quickly and ensure fair polling.
