Hyderabad: BJP MLA Payal Shankar has demanded disciplinary action against Shatavahana University professor Surapelli Sujatha for allegedly mocking the Indian Army’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ in a social media post.
In a public statement issued Thursday, Shankar said he had written to both Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, urging immediate intervention. He accused Sujatha of making comments that insulted national sentiments and undermined the morale of Indian soldiers.
Describing the post as “irresponsible and offensive,” the BJP leader said a government employee in an academic leadership position should refrain from making such statements. “It’s not just a question of freedom of speech—it’s about setting a responsible example in public discourse,” Shankar noted in his letter.
The social media post in question reportedly ridiculed aspects of the military operation, sparking criticism from several quarters. Shankar claimed the remarks were unbecoming of someone holding a government position in higher education.
The BJP MLA urged that the state take appropriate disciplinary steps, citing the potential harm to public sentiment and institutional credibility.
