Hyderabad: Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao on Thursday described the GST Council’s new two-tier tax structure as a timely relief for middle-class households ahead of the festival season. He said the revised tax slabs would bring down prices on essential items.
Speaking at the state BJP office, Rao welcomed the Council’s decision to scrap the 12% GST slab. He explained that many items taxed at 12% will now fall under the 5% category, while others will attract no GST at all. He called it a “historic decision in the taxation system” led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
According to him, the revised structure will benefit farmers, students, women, youth, and especially the middle class. He said items like milk, paneer, milk products, hair oil, toothbrushes, soaps, and shampoos will now become more affordable.
BJP plans state-wide campaign to thank PM for GST reform
To mark the announcement, Rao said the Telangana BJP will launch a “Palabhishekam” (milk anointing) campaign to honour Prime Minister Modi. The party has asked its Mahila Morcha, Kisan Morcha, SC/ST Morcha, and Yuva Morcha wings to organise the event in every mandal starting Friday.
Rao noted that the GST regime has expanded the national taxpayer base. “India had only 65.5 lakh taxpayers when GST was introduced. That number has now grown to 1.5 crore,” he said. This growth, he added, has enabled large-scale infrastructure development.
He also stated that the Modi government replaced outdated colonial tax laws with simplified legislation aimed at reducing the burden on low-income households. Rao praised the Centre’s larger governance reforms, including “One Nation-One Election,” “One Nation-One Tax,” and “One Nation-One Law.”
BJP rules out Kavitha entry, slams Congress over urea supply
Responding to media queries, Rao dismissed speculation about K. Kavitha joining the BJP. “There is no place in our party for leaders accused of corruption,” he said.
He also blamed the Congress-led Telangana government for creating an artificial shortage of urea. Rao asserted that the Centre had ensured a steady national supply, and accused the state of mismanaging distribution.
Senior leaders, including MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy and spokesperson NV Subhash, were present at the press conference.
