HYDERABAD, February 6: A delegation led by BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) met Union ministers in Delhi, raising objections against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations. The delegation submitted a six-page report highlighting concerns over the centralization of university governance and its impact on state rights.
KTR stated that the UGC norms infringe upon federal principles by limiting the autonomy of state governments in higher education. He alleged that the Centre is attempting to take control of universities through governors, undermining the authority of state governments.
The delegation also met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to formally express Telangana’s opposition to the new rules. KTR emphasized that any decisions regarding higher education should respect the federal structure and the rights of individual states.
The Telangana government has consistently voiced concerns over the increasing centralization of university administration, arguing that such moves erode the autonomy of state-run institutions. The issue remains a key point of contention between state governments and the Centre.
