Hyderabad: BRS senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Sunday accused the Congress government of targeting Muslim religious sentiments through graveyard demolitions in Kodangal constituency.
Speaking to media persons, Sohail alleged that the demolition happened late Saturday in Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s home constituency. According to him, the damaged sites included two Dargahs, two Aashoorkhanas, and the chilla-e-mubarak of Hazrat Mahboob Subhani Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani. Several graves and boundary walls were also levelled during the operation.
Sohail reminded the media that Revanth Reddy had once prayed at the same chilla-e-mubarak during his election campaign. He called the act not only insensitive but deliberate and provocative.
BRS says graveyard demolitions in Kodangal show disregard for Muslim sentiments
The BRS leader criticised the current government for bypassing protocol. He explained that previous administrations consulted religious committees before acquiring land near graveyards. In contrast, this government acted unilaterally, ignoring the views of the Muslim community.
Sohail warned that such actions could trigger unrest. He highlighted that Muslims across Borabanda, Rahmathnagar, Erragadda, Yousufguda and Vengalrao Nagar have long protested for graveyard space. Despite repeated pleas, he said the Congress government has failed to address their demands.
“When even the dead are not spared, it shows complete disregard for the community,” Sohail said. He urged Muslims, especially those linked to Sufi shrines, to speak up now. “Remaining silent at this point means failing your duty to our saints,” he added.
He further accused the government of bringing “bulldozer politics” to Telangana, referencing similar actions in Uttar Pradesh. Previously, the same administration had demolished poor families’ homes under HYDRAA drives. Now, it is targeting religious sites, he claimed.
Sohail urged voters to respond in the upcoming Jubilee Hills bypoll, saying the Congress would face consequences for its actions over the past 22 months.
