HYDERABAD- In a distinctive demonstration, members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Legislative Council, led by MLC Kavitha, protested within the Legislative Council premises adorned with garlands made of dried chillies on Monday. This symbolic act aimed to highlight the pressing issues faced by chilli farmers in Telangana.
The BRS MLCs called for the immediate announcement of a support price of ₹25,000 per quintal for chilli crops. They expressed concern over the reduction in chilli cultivation area, noting that while 400,000 acres were cultivated in the previous season, the current season has seen a decrease to 240,000 acres due to unfavorable pricing.
The legislators urged the state government to pressure the central government to facilitate procurement through agencies like NAFED and MARKFED, ensuring a support price of ₹25,000 per quintal. They also advocated for the inclusion of Telangana’s chilli crop in the food crops list by the Spices Board and called for measures to promote exports of the state’s chilli produce.
