Hyderabad, February 4: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLCs staged a walkout from the Telangana Legislative Council on Tuesday, protesting the caste census report presented by the Congress-led government. Opposition leader in the council, Sirikonda Madusudhana Chary, accused the government of undermining the rights of Backward Classes (BCs) in the name of a caste survey. He stated that the census was conducted unfairly and did not accurately reflect BC representation, which led to their decision to leave the session in protest.
Meanwhile, the Telangana Cabinet approved reports on the caste census and Scheduled Caste (SC) classification before presenting them in the Assembly and the Legislative Council. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy asserted that Telangana had successfully completed a comprehensive caste survey, which would now serve as the official demographic record for future studies.
The Chief Minister defended the government’s approach, stating that all actions were taken with responsibility and sincerity. He accused the previous Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now BRS) government, led by K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), of making political calculations instead of working in the public interest. Revanth Reddy highlighted that the demand for SC classification had existed for a long time, particularly from the Madiga and Mala communities. He assured that the state government had acted based on Supreme Court rulings, commission recommendations, and sub-committee reports.
According to the caste census, Telangana’s population comprises 56% BCs and 17% SCs. CM Reddy expressed confidence that this survey, along with SC classification, would provide a lasting solution for 73.5% of the state’s population.
