Hyderabad: BRS senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Tuesday said the Supreme Court’s interim verdict on the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 has provided some relief but has not addressed all major concerns raised by the Muslim community.
Sohail demands repeal of Waqf Amendment Act
Sohail praised the Court for staying clauses that required a practising Muslim identity for five years before creating a waqf. He also welcomed the decision to end restrictions on non-Muslim membership in Waqf Boards and to stop revenue officials from deciding waqf ownership. The leader further lauded the directive that blocks any change to waqf property records until the final verdict.
At the same time, he argued that the judgment left harmful provisions untouched. According to him, the de-recognition of waqf by user and the mandatory requirement of a waqf deed weaken institutions and attack Muslim rights.
Sohail said the 2025 amendment undermines separation of powers and violates constitutional guarantees. He accused the BJP-led NDA government of forcing the law with prejudice while ignoring expert opinion and community voices. “Partial relief is not justice,” he said.
The BRS leader demanded repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 and restoration of the earlier law. Calling the amendment “repression, not reform,” he argued that the only solution lies in a full rollback.
Sohail also announced BRS support for nationwide peaceful protests against the law. Urging Muslims and secular groups to unite, he said the issue concerns constitutional rights and religious freedom. “We will continue the struggle peacefully but with determination,” he said.
