Candle rallies across Telangana over voter list fraud allegations

Hyderabad: Congress leaders held candle rallies across all district headquarters in Telangana on Wednesday. They were protesting alleged voter list fraud and accusing the Election Commission of collaborating with the BJP. The demonstrations followed a nationwide call by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Rahul Gandhi had earlier presented documents he claimed proved tampering in electoral rolls. He alleged that the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission were jointly responsible. Responding to this, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) units launched coordinated protests. These were held under the direction of TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud.

In Hyderabad, the Khairatabad District Congress Committee conducted a rally at Necklace Road. DCC president Rohin Reddy led the event. Working president Anjan Kumar Yadav, Feroz Khan, Mettu Sai Kumar, and Vijaya Reddy also took part.

In Khammam, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu led the protest. He issued a strong statement against the central government. He condemned police cases filed against Rahul Gandhi for requesting public access to the voter list. Bhatti claimed Gandhi had uncovered major flaws—such as dead individuals still on the rolls and missing names of legitimate voters.

“The right to vote and the integrity of the Constitution are being undermined,” Bhatti said. He added that the Election Commission, instead of acting independently, had become a tool of the ruling party. According to him, the BJP was weakening democracy to impose a de facto dictatorship.

Protesters in Khammam marched from the Congress office to the Ambedkar statue at ZP Centre, holding candles. Bhatti addressed the media at the end of the rally. He called on citizens to resist what he termed a deliberate attack on democratic institutions.

Khammam District Congress Committee president Durga Prasad led the mobilisation. Senior leaders including Pucchakayala Veerabhadram, Baby Swarnakumari, Dobballa Soujanya, and RTA member Venkanna also participated.
