New Delhi: The Congress party has asked its Backward Class (BC) leaders from Telangana to take the caste census issue directly to the people, presenting it as a transformative step towards social justice and equitable governance.
At a high-level meeting held at the India International Centre in Delhi, attended by AICC general secretaries, TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, BC ministers from Telangana, MLAs, MLCs, and other senior party figures, the Congress leadership emphasised the need to frame the central government’s decision on caste census as a direct result of its sustained pressure.
Congress leaders described Telangana’s own caste survey, conducted by the state government, as a model for the rest of the country. Minister for BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar, speaking to the media after the meeting, said, “The Telangana survey has already become a national benchmark, and the Centre has followed suit. This is a victory for the Congress vision of social justice.”
He added that Rahul Gandhi strongly believes true justice for backward classes can only come through a caste-based census, which will help determine population-based entitlements and rights.
The meeting also explored concrete steps to ensure the caste census benefits BC communities that have historically remained excluded from systemic representation.
As part of the awareness drive, Telangana Congress will present a detailed report of its caste survey to the Centre to aid in developing a national policy framework.
Ponnam Prabhakar described the caste census as a pro-BC initiative and dismissed criticism that it could be divisive. “This is not against anyone. It is for those who have remained invisible in the system for decades,” he said.
He also called Rahul Gandhi the “true leader of backward classes,” crediting him for championing their cause on a national stage.
