Hyderabad: The Central government is preparing a major reform in India’s school education system. To align with rapidly advancing technology, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) lessons from Class 3 onwards. The new curriculum, therefore, will take effect in nearly 31,000 CBSE-affiliated schools from the 2026–27 academic year.
CBSE to launch AI education from Class 3
The initiative aims to create early awareness of AI among young learners. Through this effort, students will not only enhance language and problem-solving skills but also gain exposure to advanced technologies. Moreover, the syllabus will include modules on chatbots, language models, and generative AI.
Officials explained that students will start with basic AI concepts in Class 3. From Class 6, however, AI will be introduced as a skill subject. Consequently, children will gradually transition from a basic understanding to a practical application of AI tools.
Training teachers to adapt to AI-driven classrooms
Union Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar said the government’s goal is to “build technological awareness among students from an early age.” He further stated that a pilot project is already underway to ensure an effective rollout. In this project, teachers are already using AI tools in classrooms to evaluate learning outcomes.
In addition, the ministry will soon launch nationwide training sessions for nearly one crore teachers. These programmes will help educators understand AI technology and apply it effectively in daily teaching. As a result, teachers will acquire new digital skills and deliver improved learning experiences. Ultimately, the government believes this reform will modernise classrooms and prepare students for a technology-driven future.
