Hyderabad: Union Minister Kishan Reddy on Tuesday assured Telangana farmers that the Centre will procure cotton through 122 designated purchase centres and urged them not to sell their produce at low prices outside the system.
Speaking after a meeting with Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh in Delhi, Reddy said the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) had already begun procurement, although there had been delays. He encouraged farmers to sell cotton directly to CCI and avoid private agents offering unfair prices.
Moisture limit capped at 12%
Reddy clarified that CCI would purchase only cotton with moisture content below 12 percent. He said machines to measure moisture levels would be available at all purchase centres.
He further directed officials to form local monitoring committees at all 122 procurement locations to assist farmers and prevent exploitation. If anyone cheats farmers, they should report the matter to authorities immediately, he said.
Central support assured for Telangana
Reddy reiterated that the central government remains committed to supporting cotton farmers and will continue purchases through the season. He also promised cooperation with the Telangana government to ensure smooth procurement.
During the meeting, Reddy submitted formal petitions to Minister Giriraj Singh outlining the challenges faced by cotton growers in the state.
