Hyderabad: The Centre revised the UPI toll payment rule for vehicles on national highways, giving major relief to motorists who travel without a FASTag. Until now, drivers who lacked FASTag paid double the toll, whether they used cash or UPI. The new decision changed that structure and reduced the burden on UPI users. From early Friday, drivers who pay through UPI will need to pay only 25 per cent extra instead of the earlier double amount.
Motorists see relief under new UPI toll payment rule
Current rules force vehicles without FASTag to pay twice the toll at all plazas on national highways. That requirement applies in full to cash payments. The new policy alters only the UPI component and gives a clear cost advantage to digital users.
Consider a ₹100 toll. FASTag users pay ₹100. A driver without FASTag pays ₹200 when paying in cash. Under the revised plan, a UPI user pays ₹125, which reflects the 25 per cent surcharge. NHAI officers began updating software across toll plazas to activate the new structure. They also confirmed that cash payments will continue to attract the double fee without exception.
