Hyderabad: Chief Electoral Officer C Sudharshan Reddy on Tuesday met with leaders of major political parties to review preparations for the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election, following the official announcement of the poll schedule.
Leaders from the BJP, Congress, BRS, AAP, and MIM participated. The CEO outlined sweeping electoral reforms that the Election Commission is introducing for the first time. These reforms, piloted during the Bihar elections, will also apply to bypolls across eight states, including Telangana.
Key reforms for improved voter experience
Sudhar Reddy said the new measures aim to improve convenience, transparency, and efficiency. He added that the Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, is focused on making elections more inclusive and voter-friendly.
Each polling station will now serve a maximum of 1,200 voters to reduce crowding. Additionally, EVMs and ballot units will display colour photographs of contesting candidates for easier identification. More women polling staff will be deployed to boost female participation.
Polling centres will also include accessibility features such as ramps, wheelchairs, and door-to-door transport for older people and voters with disabilities.
AI, GPS, and digital monitoring introduced
The CEO said real-time voter turnout will be tracked through digital dashboards and mobile apps. Authorities will use AI-based surveillance and GPS tools at sensitive polling stations to detect and prevent malpractice.
He emphasised stricter Model Code of Conduct enforcement through technology-backed monitoring teams. He also stressed the use of eco-friendly election practices, such as reduced paper usage, digital communication, and green materials at polling booths.
Departments directed to ensure readiness
Sudhar Reddy reviewed the readiness of departments involved in the electoral process. He urged all political parties to strictly follow the Model Code of Conduct and extend full cooperation to ensure peaceful and transparent polling.
Additional CEO Lokesh Kumar, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, Deputy CEOs Hari Singh and Satya Vani, and other senior officials also took part in the meeting.
