Hyderabad: Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Chegunta road overbridge, ending years of delays from repeated railway gate closures.
The bridge will be built entirely with central government funds. Reddy thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for sanctioning the project. He said over 1.2 lakh commuters face daily traffic jams due to the gate, which the bridge will resolve.
At the event, BJP leader Raghunandan Rao said gate closures had long disrupted travel between Chegunta and Medak. He called the overbridge a long-pending solution to a daily hardship.
Chegunta road overbridge delayed for years by funding gap
Reddy said the Centre approved half of the funds in 2016, but the then BRS-led state government failed to release its share. He added that fresh appeals to the current Congress government, including to Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, went unanswered.
He said construction is moving forward only because of central funding. The plaque, he noted, will carry the names of the Prime Minister and the Union Railway Minister.
Reddy dismissed the idea that MPs are absent from the ground. “Since my election, I’ve stayed among the people and worked to solve their problems,” he said.
MP pushes for train halts, Wadiaram platform upgrade
Reddy asked Railway Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Santosh Kumar Verma to stop Devagiri and Rayalaseema Express trains at Chegunta. He cited high demand from settlers from Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
He also announced a new platform for Wadiaram railway station and urged quick completion of the Chegunta bridge. He asked contractors to work with local officials to avoid delays.
DRM Verma confirmed the bridge will benefit nearly 1.2 lakh passengers each day. He also announced that Wadiaram station will get a reservation counter within ten days.
Local BJP leaders honoured the DRM. Chegunta MRO Srikanth, SI Chaitanya Reddy, railway officials, and BJP mandal leaders from Chegunta, Masayipet, and Narsingi attended the event.
