Hyderabad: Tragedy struck in Siddipet district on Saturday when two children accidentally drowned in the Ranganayaka Sagar reservoir, a site recently developed as a tourist destination.
The victims were identified as 12-year-old Mehraj Zaman, daughter of Yaqoob Baba, and 14-year-old Syed Arbaaz Ali, son of Syed Ijaz Ali—both residents of LB Nagar in Warangal. The two families, who are neighbours, had paused at the reservoir during a journey to Hyderabad for a brief recreational stop amid the summer holidays.
According to police reports, the children ventured near the water and tragically slipped in. Local residents alerted the police, who arrived promptly and launched a search operation with the assistance of expert swimmers. Mehraj’s body was recovered around 1 PM, followed by Arbaaz’s body later in the afternoon.
The bodies were transported to the government hospital in Siddipet for post-mortem examination, after which they were handed over to the families.
The families were travelling together in an Innova vehicle, with a total of 10 members. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the community and raised concerns about safety measures at tourist locations.
