HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, addressing the Assembly, described the SC Categorization Bill as a historic moment, resolving a long-standing issue that had cost many lives in the struggle. He assured that his government is committed to standing by the Dalit community and working for their upliftment.
Revanth Reddy highlighted the Congress party’s legacy in empowering Dalits, recalling how Damodaram Sanjivayya, a Dalit, was made Chief Minister of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh in 1960. He also pointed out that the party appointed Mallikarjun Kharge, a Dalit leader, as the AICC President.
Legal Battle and Government’s Action on SC Categorization
Referring to the prolonged legal battle over SC categorization in Punjab, Revanth Reddy stated that after coming to power, his government actively supported the case before a seven-judge Supreme Court bench. He emphasized that as soon as the court delivered a favorable verdict, Telangana passed a resolution supporting categorization in the Assembly.
The government took several steps, including forming a cabinet sub-committee, consulting legal experts, and appointing a one-man commission. The commission’s report was approved without any modifications, leading to the division of 59 SC sub-castes into three groups with a 15% reservation.
Support for Families of Martyrs and Future Steps
CM Revanth Reddy assured that families of those who lost their lives in the SC categorization struggle would receive government assistance. They will be prioritized in schemes like Indiramma housing and Rajiv Yuva Vikasam.
He reiterated that the decision taken by the government is being widely supported and confirmed that after the 2026 Census, SC reservations will be further increased based on the new population data. “It is our responsibility not only to increase reservations but also to distribute them fairly,” he stated.
Congress’s Commitment to Dalit Welfare
“As the Leader of the House, I give my word—under Indiramma Rajyam, injustice will not happen to you,” Revanth Reddy assured Dalits. He emphasized that the government will take full responsibility for implementing and increasing SC reservations.
He concluded his speech by expressing gratitude to all members who cooperated in passing the bill.
