Hyderabad, January 29: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. He also wished for the swift recovery of the injured.
The Chief Minister urged both the Central Government and the Uttar Pradesh administration to provide adequate assistance to the affected families. He assured that, if requested, the Telangana state government is prepared to offer necessary support to Uttar Pradesh.
The stampede occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the Triveni Sangam, where a large number of devotees had gathered for the Amrit Snan. The sudden surge led to the collapse of barricades, resulting in the tragic incident. Reports indicate that at least 20 devotees have died, and around 50 others sustained injuries. The injured were promptly transported to the Central Hospital in Maha Kumbh Nagar by paramilitary forces and volunteers.
The incident took place during the Mauni Amavasya, a day when devotees traditionally gather for a holy dip. Authorities have indicated that the death toll may rise as more information becomes available.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to inquire about the situation and instructed that the injured receive the best possible medical care. Home Minister Amit Shah also reached out to CM Yogi, offering support from the central government. As of now, official statements regarding the exact number of casualties are pending.
