HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made a strong declaration in the state Assembly, pledging to lead the fight for 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs). He reminded the House that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to increase BC reservations to 42% before coming to power, and his government was now taking concrete steps to fulfill that commitment.
The Chief Minister stated that on February 4, 2024, the Telangana government initiated the BC caste census, a significant step toward ensuring fair representation. He expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the survey and emphasized that Telangana society stands united in its support for enhanced BC reservations.
Revanth Reddy pointed out that the previous government had sent a proposal to the Governor recommending an increase in BC reservations to 37%. However, his administration decided to withdraw that proposal and submit a fresh one, raising the quota to 42%.
Marking February 4 as Social Justice Day, the Telangana Assembly passed a resolution in support of the move. The Chief Minister stressed that the 42% reservation bill was brought after consulting all stakeholders, ensuring broad consensus on the issue.
Reiterating his personal commitment, Revanth Reddy assured that he would lead from the front to achieve the goal. He called on all-party leaders to join forces and approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi to push for the required legislative changes at the central level. He specifically urged Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy, Bandi Sanjay, and BJP floor leaders to help secure an appointment with the Prime Minister.
The Chief Minister also assigned the responsibility of coordinating with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, urging Gandhi to raise the issue in Parliament. He firmly stated that the BC caste census conducted by the Telangana government was 100% accurate and should serve as the basis for the reservation policy.
Revanth Reddy declared that achieving 42% BC reservations is a non-negotiable goal for his government, and until it is realized, the fight will continue. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Kamareddy Declaration, underscoring the Congress party’s resolve to ensure social justice for BCs.
