Prayagraj, January 29: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the Mahakumbh stampede in Prayagraj, which claimed around 30 lives. Addressing the media, he stated that he was “deeply saddened” by the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He also announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased and ordered a judicial inquiry.
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the tragedy. The panel, led by Justice Harsh Kumar, includes former DGP V.K. Gupta and retired IAS officer D.K. Singh. The commission has been directed to submit its findings to the state government within a month. Additionally, the Chief Secretary and DGP will personally visit Prayagraj to assess the situation.
CM Yogi further informed that 36 injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in Prayagraj hospitals. He attributed the stampede to a breach in the barricading at Akhara Marg, which led to chaos among the crowd. Rescue teams, including the police and NDRF, promptly transported the injured to hospitals while the administration worked to reopen blocked routes.
The stampede occurred as large crowds gathered at the Sangam for the Mauni Amavasya holy dip from 7 PM on Tuesday. CM Yogi assured that adequate arrangements had been made for the influx of devotees and stated that a separate police investigation would be conducted to examine the incident.
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief efforts while ensuring measures to prevent further mishaps during the ongoing Mahakumbh.
