Adilabad Collectorate building collapse after heavy rain sparks safety concerns

Hyderabad: A section of an old building on the Adilabad district collectorate premises collapsed on Thursday evening after heavy rain. No casualties were reported as the portion was vacant when the incident occurred.

The collapse took place while Minister Jupally Krishna Rao was reviewing development works with officials at the rear of the collectorate. Authorities rushed to the site and launched immediate precautionary measures.

After the slab collapse, authorities gave government staff at the collectorate the day off. The building houses the Collector’s office along with the RDO and Treasury, and the incident has stirred serious safety concerns among employees.

The 84-year-old building had been in a state of disrepair. Employees said roof tiles had been falling for nearly 15 years, with only makeshift repairs attempted. The latest collapse has left many reluctant to attend duties inside the structure.

Work on a new collectorate complex had started but was stalled midway due to lack of funds, sources said. The delay has forced employees to continue working in the unsafe building despite repeated warnings.
