HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Election Commission has released the notification schedule for the Hyderabad Local Authorities’ Constituency MLC elections. In light of this, the Congress party has reportedly decided to abstain from participating in these elections, citing insufficient strength within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Additionally, the Congress is expected to extend its support to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) in this election.
The election aims to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of M.S. Prabhakar Rao on May 1, 2025. The notification was released on March 28, with polling scheduled for April 23 and vote counting set for April 25, as per the Election Commission’s announcement.
In the GHMC elections held in December 2020, the BRS party secured 56 seats, BJP won 48, AIMIM obtained 44, while the Congress managed to win only 2 seats. Recently, political shifts have occurred, with GHMC Mayor Vijayalakshmi joining the Congress party, along with several corporators from BRS and BJP. Despite these developments, the Congress still lacks the necessary strength to secure a victory in the MLC elections, leading to its decision to abstain.
This move follows unexpected setbacks for the ruling Congress party in the recent MLC elections for two teacher constituencies and one graduate constituency, where the candidates supported by Congress faced defeat.
