Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Council S. Madhusudhana Chary on Wednesday accused both the Congress and BJP of systematically deceiving Backward Classes (BCs) in the name of reservations.
In a statement, the BRS leader said both parties had historically denied BCs political power, financial support, and meaningful representation. He criticised the Congress for failing to implement 42 percent BC reservations, conduct a caste census, or act on the Kamareddy BC Declaration, which promised a BC Sub-Plan with an annual budget of Rs 20,000 crore.
He accused the Congress of treating BCs as second-class citizens for 75 years and now resorting to “empty promises” in pursuit of their votes. Madhusudhana Chary dismissed remarks from TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud and Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, and said the BJP was equally culpable.
He questioned why the BJP had not amended the Constitution to enable BC reservations in Telangana, as it had done for Tamil Nadu. He said the BJP’s evasive stance on the issue reflected contempt for BCs.
Chary credited the previous BRS government under K. Chandrashekhar Rao for implementing schemes to uplift BCs, including self-respect buildings, welfare programmes, and nearly 300 BC residential schools. He warned that BRS would continue to confront the Congress over its unfulfilled commitments until the Kamareddy BC Declaration is implemented in full.
