Hyderabad: Telangana Food and Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said the Congress government has secured food entitlements for 3.15 crore people over 80% of the state’s population through a massive ration card and rice distribution campaign.
Touring five constituencies in undivided Nalgonda district, Uttam Kumar Reddy led ration card distribution events in Peddavooru, Huzurnagar, Kattangur, Bhudan Pochampally, and Alair. He was joined by SC and Minority Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar, Civil Supplies Commissioner DS Chauhan, local MLAs, and party leaders.
He stated that as of July 28, Telangana had 97.9 lakh active ration cards covering 3.15 crore people. Since January 26, 2025, the government has issued 7.95 lakh new cards and added 11.37 lakh individuals to existing ones bringing 33.97 lakh new beneficiaries into the system.
“This rapid expansion shows the Congress government’s resolve. What BRS failed to deliver in 10 years, we’ve completed in just over six months,” he said.
Uttam noted that the free fine rice scheme, launched on Ugadi from Huzurnagar, has become a signature initiative. “It ensures 6 kg of fine-quality rice per person per month to every cardholder,” he said. “It’s not just food it’s dignity.”
In its first phase, the programme benefited 1.85 crore people. With expanded card coverage, 3.15 crore now receive this entitlement statewide.
The minister stressed that the programme goes beyond symbolism. “We’re not announcing schemes from Hyderabad we’re reaching every basti, every mandal, solving people’s problems face-to-face.”
Minister Laxman Kumar added, “Every deserving family, regardless of background, is being served fairly. There’s no room for delay or bias.”
Uttam concluded, “This is Telangana’s food revolution. We’re not managing hunger we’re correcting injustice. Welfare is no longer a favour; it’s a right.”
