Hyderabad: Congress leaders in Telangana welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the petition against 42% BC (Backward Class) reservations in local bodies. They called the verdict a positive and progressive step for social justice.
TPCC Chief Mahesh Goud said the ruling was a “welcome development.” He stated that both the Congress and the Telangana government had consistently fought to implement the 42% quota for BCs. According to him, the decision reaffirmed their commitment to expand political representation for backward communities.
Congress hails Supreme Court verdict on BC reservations
Mahesh Goud explained that the government had already passed three laws, one ordinance, and one G.O. to enforce BC reservations. Moreover, he expressed confidence that the High Court would also give a favourable verdict on October 8. He urged all communities to support the 42% political quota, saying it was essential for inclusive governance.
Congress spokesperson Dr. Konagala Mahesh also lauded the judgment. However, he criticised BJP and BRS for trying to block the reservation policy. He said some parties could not tolerate Congress giving justice to BC youth. In his view, BRS leaders were using caste organisations as a cover to file petitions. Furthermore, he warned that BCs were closely watching those trying to deny their rights. He reiterated that the Congress remained firmly committed to ensuring BC representation.
