Hyderabad: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday filed an implead petition in the Telangana High Court to support the 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in Panchayat Raj elections.
The case challenges Government Order (GO) 9, which mandates 42% BC reservation in local bodies. CPI State Secretary and MLA Koonamaneni Sambasiva Rao submitted the petition, requesting the court to list the party as a respondent. He said the CPI strongly backs enhanced political representation for BCs.
CPI urges court to protect social justice
The CPI asked the court to dismiss the writ petition opposing GO 9. It argued that the CPI BC quota case goes beyond election policy and touches on core constitutional values. The party reaffirmed its long-standing support for BC reservations in education, employment, and local governance.
According to CPI, the 42% quota addresses historic marginalisation and promotes equity. The party warned that any attempt to reduce these protections must be challenged legally and politically.
It also stressed that BCs play a vital role in grassroots democracy. Denying them fair representation, CPI said, would weaken constitutional ideals.
The party pledged to fight all efforts to reverse gains in social justice. It said it would use both legal means and public advocacy to uphold reservation laws.
The Telangana High Court is expected to hear the matter soon. CPI’s intervention adds political weight to the legal battle for backward class representation in Telangana.
