Hyderabad: CPI(M) will contest the upcoming local body elections in Telangana, state secretary John Wesley announced on Wednesday. The party plans to field candidates in regions where it has built strong movements and retained a support base.
Addressing reporters in Hyderabad, Wesley said the state committee will meet on October 4 to decide strategy and discuss alliances. He underlined that defeating the BJP remains the party’s foremost political duty.
CPI(M) opposes the denial of ST reservations in agency districts
Wesley accused the BJP of blocking 42 per cent BC reservations and withholding central funds and urea supplies. He also objected to the state government’s district parishad reservation notification.
Rules under the Fifth Schedule bar reservations for non-tribals in agency areas, Wesley pointed out. He demanded that the government reserve Zilla Parishad chairman posts for STs in districts with large tribal populations.
The CPI(M) leader said Adivasis faced injustice in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, and Mahabubabad, where chairman posts were declared general instead of reserved. He urged the government to amend the orders and restore ST quotas in these districts.
