Hyderabad: Cyberabad police intensified drunk driving enforcement over the weekend, apprehending 527 motorists across vehicle categories and forwarding them to court for legal action.
A total of 404 two-wheeler riders, 24 three-wheeler drivers, 93 four-wheeler operators, and 6 heavy vehicle drivers were booked. Offenders were classified by blood alcohol levels: 456 between 35 and 200 mg/100 ml, 47 between 201 and 300, and 24 between 301 and 500.
Drunk driving leads to jail terms, social service
Cyberabad police reiterated that fatal accidents involving intoxicated drivers would be prosecuted under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
In the past week, courts disposed of 243 drunk driving cases. Of these, 221 resulted in fines, 22 in jail terms (18 received two days, two received three days, and two received four days), and 19 offenders were sentenced to social service.
Cyberabad traffic authorities urged the public to avoid drunk driving and warned of continued enforcement. The drunk driving enforcement push will continue with zero tolerance.
