Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police has launched a major initiative to improve child safety in schools by establishing School Safety Clubs. The announcement was made at a meeting held on Saturday at the Cyberabad CP Office Auditorium, led by Madhapur L&O DCP Dr. Vineeth G, IPS.
The initiative mandates the creation of structured safety mechanisms within schools focusing on four key areas: physical safety, cyber safety, drug abuse prevention, and mental health. Each vertical will be supervised by trained faculty and supported by Balamitra teachers.
Addressing school principals and management from the Madhapur Zone, Dr. Vineeth stressed a child-centric approach, urging schools to actively involve students in safety planning and provide secure avenues to report abuse or distress.
The DCP highlighted serious issues including bullying, suicide, drug use, and harassment. He stated that offenders can include peers, staff, or outsiders. Schools were directed to enforce zero-tolerance policies on ragging and bullying, create Anti-Ragging Committees, and monitor high-risk areas such as hostels and transport routes.
He also flagged drug abuse as a growing problem and cited the NDPS Act, warning that institutions will be held accountable if substances are found on premises. For minors, rehabilitation will be pursued under the Juvenile Justice Act.
In cases of sexual harassment, Dr. Vineeth stressed compliance with the POCSO Act. Staff must report any suspected abuse, and schools are required to set up POCSO Committees, conduct awareness drives, and vet employee backgrounds.
Schools must establish safety protocols per national guidelines, develop School Safety Plans, conduct regular PTA meetings, train staff, and integrate safety education.
W&CSW DCP Srujana Karnam reaffirmed police commitment to child safety through ongoing efforts like awareness campaigns, the Suraksha Kavach initiative, and digital safety education. She urged use of CHILDLINE 1098 in emergencies.
Traffic DCP Sai Manohar raised concerns about traffic risks during school hours and called for enhanced infrastructure including signage, crossings, and active traffic management. He also emphasized staff verification, CCTV surveillance, and access control.
The meeting was attended by senior police officials and school management representatives from government and private institutions.
