Hyderabad: As Cyclone Montha moves closer to the east coast, Hyderabad is preparing for heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible flooding over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the city would begin feeling the cyclone’s impact from Tuesday evening.
IMD warns of rain and flooding risk
IMD officials explained that several parts of the city could experience light to moderate rain. Moreover, a few zones might receive heavy showers along with thunder and lightning. They cautioned that intense rain could cause waterlogging and traffic delays.
GNRS Srinivasa Rao, IMD Telangana Meteorologist, said the storm was intensifying rapidly. “By tomorrow morning, it will turn into a severe cyclone and reach coastal Andhra Pradesh. It will likely cross between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada by tomorrow evening or night,” he noted.
Cyclone to impact Andhra coast and Telangana
After making landfall, the cyclone will move inland toward Telangana in a north-northwesterly direction. Consequently, coastal and adjoining districts of Andhra Pradesh may experience extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds starting Tuesday.
The IMD’s seven-day forecast predicts generally cloudy skies and light to moderate rain from October 29 onward. Furthermore, conditions will intensify by October 31, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the city. “Hyderabad will also see frequent spells of rain from tomorrow evening. Even moderate rain could trigger floods in many areas. Therefore, residents should avoid travel from tomorrow afternoon until the following night,” Rao advised.
Telangana districts on alert
The IMD issued an orange alert for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu districts. In addition, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Medak, Sangareddy, and Vikarabad were placed under a yellow alert. Officials urged people to stay indoors, limit movement, and remain alert for flash floods in low-lying areas.
Temperature and humidity outlook
Throughout the week, Hyderabad’s temperature will range between 30°C and 32°C, while humidity could reach 88% on rainy days. Because the ground is already saturated, even moderate showers may cause flooding in several pockets, traffic jams, and delays in public transport.
Authorities urged citizens to stay informed through weather updates and remain ready as Hyderabad braces for another round of intense monsoon activity driven by Cyclone Montha.
