Hyderabad: Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha on Tuesday launched 34 District Day Care Cancer Centers across Telangana, a significant move to bring cancer care closer to local communities. He inaugurated the facilities virtually from Sangareddy Medical College.
Telangana decentralises cancer treatment with new district centers
Each district now has a cancer center offering screening, chemotherapy, diagnosis, and palliative care. This decentralisation aims to reduce the burden on major hospitals in Hyderabad such as MNJ Cancer Institute and NIMS, while sparing patients from long travel.
Officials estimate Telangana sees over 55,000 new cancer cases annually a number expected to exceed 65,000 within five years. The new centers are designed to manage early detection and treatment more efficiently.
Cancer care closer to communities
All 34 centers will offer day care chemotherapy, preventive screening, and essential palliative services. In the coming months, the Health Department plans to deploy mobile cancer screening units to improve outreach in rural areas.
Global guidance for cancer elimination
The initiative is being guided by globally renowned oncologist Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori to ensure world-class care and practices. The Health Department is also partnering with the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) to offer foreign language training to nursing students enhancing their international career prospects.
Principal Secretary (Health) Dr. Christina Chongthu and Sangareddy District Collector also participated in the inauguration ceremony.
